The Herd

happy cows from California

Our cows are active participants in improving the land and the watershed. With small numbers, a closed herd, and careful pasture rotation, the grass resprouts between grazings, building root vigor.

Our herd is Black Angus from local seedstock, and they are well adapted to the Western Sonoma County climate. They thrive on grass and supplemental alfalfa, and are never fed grain, byproducts, or fillers of any kind.

They're delicious because we watch the grass very carefully, and we rotate them regularly, depending on the grass, the weather, the season, and good common sense.

We treat them with respect, and they respond with good strong weight gain, healthy calves, and the glossiest coats we've seen.

Grass growth is stimulated by the ancient pattern of hooved animals grazing and moving on. The herd thrives on good grass, clean water, and freedom of movement in the West County sunshine.

We monitor seed set and species composition in the grassland to support the recovery and expansion of native perennial bunchgrasses.
